About Blackmagic IP10

Blackmagic IP10 is an uncompressed 10-bit video-over-IP format for Blackmagic cameras and switchers — essentially uncompressed video carried over 10 GbE.

IP10 targets a specific job: moving camera-original quality (10-bit) across a 10 GbE network without any codec loss. Like ST 2110 it is uncompressed, so the stream bitrate is the raw bitrate — the benefit is perfect quality, and the cost is a lot of bandwidth per stream.

The same raw formula applies: width × height × frame rate × bits-per-pixel, with a compression ratio of 1. Because IP10 caps at 10-bit, a 10-bit 4:2:2 1080p signal is roughly 1.24 Gbps — comfortably one stream on 10 GbE, but far more than 1 GbE can carry.

Worked example

A 1080p30 4:2:0 signal is 746.5 Mbps raw and IP10 carries it uncompressed (1:1 ratio), so the stream is 746.5 Mbps. Uncompressed 10-bit workflows therefore build on 10 GbE.

Is IP10 lossless?

Yes — it is uncompressed 10-bit, so there is no codec loss, only whatever the source format already is.

Does IP10 run on 1 GbE?

Practically no. Uncompressed 1080p exceeds 1 GbE, so IP10 is designed for 10 GbE infrastructure.

How does IP10 compare to ST 2110?

Both are uncompressed; IP10 is a Blackmagic-specific 10-bit format, while ST 2110 is the open broadcast standard with broader bit-depth support.

What is the difference between raw and stream bitrate?

Raw is the uncompressed signal (width × height × frame rate × bits per pixel); stream is what the codec actually puts on the wire after compression. The compression ratio is raw ÷ stream.

What do 4:4:4, 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 mean?

They describe chroma subsampling — how much colour detail is kept relative to brightness. 4:4:4 keeps full colour (3× bit depth per pixel), 4:2:2 keeps two-thirds, and 4:2:0 keeps half (1.5×).
