About JPEG XS / IPMX (ST 2110-22)

JPEG XS is a lightweight, low-latency, visually lossless codec standardized as ST 2110-22 and used by the IPMX (Internet Protocol Media Experience) standard.

JPEG XS compresses video only a few times (typically 4:1 to 8:1) but keeps latency to a few lines of video — low enough for live production. That makes it the sweet spot for 4K60 over 10 GbE, which raw ST 2110 cannot do.

The bitrate is the raw signal divided by the codec ratio (this tool models ≈5:1). Unlike heavier codecs, JPEG XS keeps 4:4:4 and 12-bit, so a 4K60 4:4:4 signal drops from about 12 Gbps raw to roughly 2.4 Gbps on the wire — still 10 GbE territory.

Worked example

A 4K60 4:4:4 signal is 11.9 Gbps raw; JPEG XS compresses it about 5:1, so the stream is about 2388.8 Mbps — one stream fits 10 GbE with room for more.

Frequently asked questions

Is JPEG XS truly lossless?

It is "visually lossless" — imperceptible loss at a few:1 compression. It is not mathematically lossless like ST 2110.

What is IPMX?

IPMX is the AIMS/VSF standard that packages JPEG XS (and other essence) for open interoperable AV-over-IP, targeting pro AV installations.

JPEG XS vs SDVoE?

Both are low-latency 10 GbE codecs. JPEG XS is open (ST 2110-22 / IPMX); SDVoE is an alliance ecosystem with its own ASIC-based endpoints.

What is the difference between raw and stream bitrate?

Raw is the uncompressed signal (width × height × frame rate × bits per pixel); stream is what the codec actually puts on the wire after compression. The compression ratio is raw ÷ stream.

What do 4:4:4, 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 mean?

They describe chroma subsampling — how much colour detail is kept relative to brightness. 4:4:4 keeps full colour (3× bit depth per pixel), 4:2:2 keeps two-thirds, and 4:2:0 keeps half (1.5×).
