How LED pixel pitch works
An LED wall is built from modules of tiny LEDs, and pixel pitch is the distance in millimetres between the centres of two neighbouring LEDs. It is the single number that ties everything else together: a finer pitch packs more pixels into the same wall, so it looks sharper up close but costs more. The pixel grid ispixels = floor(wall size in mm ÷ pitch) in each direction.
Pitch also sets the viewing distance. As a rule of thumb, the minimum distance is about1 m per millimetre of pitch (P3.91 → ~3.9 m), and a comfortable, seamless image needs 1.5–2.0× the pitch. That is why indoor walls use fine pitches (P1.2–P2.5) and outdoor billboards can use coarse ones (P4–P10): the audience is simply further away.
Finally, the pixel grid sets the content resolution you can show natively. A wall can display a standard resolution only if both its pixel width and height are at least that resolution — 720p needs 1280×720, 1080p needs 1920×1080, and 4K needs 3840×2160.
Worked example
A 4.0 × 2.25 m wall at P3.91 gives 4000 ÷ 3.91 = 1023 pixels across and 2250 ÷ 3.91 = 575 pixels down — about 588,000 pixels total. Its minimum viewing distance is 3.9 m (comfortable 5.9–7.8 m), and since the grid is smaller than 1280×720, its native content resolution is below 720p.

What is LED pixel pitch?
Pixel pitch is the distance in millimetres between the centres of two adjacent LEDs. A P1.5 panel has LEDs 1.5 mm apart, a P10 panel 10 mm apart. Smaller pitch means more pixels in the same area — and a higher resolution.
Why does pixel pitch set the viewing distance?
If you stand too close to a coarse pitch, you see the individual LEDs and the gaps between them. A common rule is a minimum viewing distance of about 1 m per millimetre of pitch (P3.91 → ~3.9 m), with 1.5–2.0× pitch for a comfortable, seamless image.
What pitch for indoor vs outdoor?
Indoor walls are viewed up close, so they use fine pitches (P1.2–P2.5). Outdoor billboards are seen from far away and can use coarse pitches (P4–P10) — the distance does the smoothing for you.
How many pixels does my wall have?
Divide the wall size by the pitch: pixels across = floor(width in mm ÷ pitch), pixels down = floor(height in mm ÷ pitch). Multiply the two for the total pixel count.
What content resolution can my wall show?
The highest standard resolution whose width and height both fit inside the wall’s pixel grid — 720p (1280×720), 1080p (1920×1080) or 4K (3840×2160). A wall smaller than 1280×720 is below 720p.
