Presentation Screen Size: How to Calculate It (AVIXA 4/6/8)

A screen that's too small makes the back row squint; too large and the front row pans their heads. For presentation rooms the size comes from the AVIXA 4/6/8 viewing-distance rule — and the Display Planner turns that rule into an exact number for your room.

The AVIXA 4/6/8 rule for presentations

AVIXA's display standard splits viewing into three zones, each a multiple of screen height: analytical (closest, 4× height) for fine detail, basic decision-making (6× height) as the recommended planning target, and reading (8× height) as the furthest acceptable distance. For a presentation screen, the 6× height rule is your starting point.

Worked example: a 30-seat meeting room

Say the furthest seat is 6 m (19.7 ft) from the screen. Working backwards from 6× height, the screen height should be about 6 m ÷ 6 = 1 m — roughly a 2 m (≈ 6.6 ft / 80″) 16:9 diagonal. If the furthest seat is only 4.5 m (14.8 ft), a 1.5 m (≈ 60″) screen is enough.

How to calculate it with our calculator

Open the Display Planner and select Presentation mode. Enter either the diagonal you are considering (to see the viewing zones) or work backwards from your room size — the planner draws the analytical, basic and reading zones over your room so you can see exactly which seats fall in range.

For a quick diagonal ↔ width ↔ height conversion, use the Screen Size Calculator: enter the diagonal and it returns the width and height for any aspect ratio.

Aspect ratio and content type

16:9 is the default for modern slide decks; 16:10 suits laptop-driven rooms where the presenter screen matches the room display. The Screen Size Calculator handles both, plus 4:3 for legacy setups.

Frequently asked questions

How big should a presentation screen be for 20 people?

Size it from the furthest seat, not headcount. For a furthest seat around 5 m (16.4 ft), a 1.6–2 m (65–80″) 16:9 screen is typical. Run the room through the Display Planner for the exact figure.

What is the AVIXA 4/6/8 rule?

Viewing distance as multiples of screen height: 4× is the analytical (closest) zone, 6× is the basic recommended target, and 8× is the furthest readable distance.

Can I size a presentation screen from room dimensions?

Yes — the Display Planner takes room width and depth plus seat rows, and draws all three viewing zones over your actual layout.
