55 vs 65 vs 75 Inch TV: Which Should You Buy?

55, 65 and 75 inches are the three TV sizes most people actually buy, and the right choice is almost always decided by one number: how far you sit from the screen.

The deciding factor: viewing distance

Use a simple rule of thumb — screen diagonal in inches ≈ viewing distance in inches ÷ 1.6. Sitting 2.5 m (8.2 ft / 100″) away points to a 60–65″ screen; 3 m (9.8 ft / 120″) points to 75″.

When each size wins

55″ is best under about 2.2 m (7.2 ft) and in smaller rooms where a big panel dominates the wall. 65″ is the sweet spot for 2.2–2.8 m (7.2–9.2 ft) — big enough for 4K detail, still affordable. 75″ is for 2.8 m (9.2 ft) and beyond, where the extra size buys immersion rather than pixelation.

Price and pixel density

Each step up costs roughly 40–60% more, so 75″ is a real budget jump. With 4K, all three look sharp at their recommended distance — you lose detail only if you sit closer than the resolution supports. Check your exact distance with the Display Planner before committing.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 65 inch TV too big for a small living room?

Not if you sit 2.2 m (7.2 ft) or more from it. Measure your actual seating distance first — the Display Planner turns it into a concrete size recommendation.

Is a 75 inch TV worth the price jump?

Only if your seating distance is about 2.8 m (9.2 ft) or more. Closer than that, a 65″ looks just as sharp for less money.
