About Crestron NVX
Crestron NVX is a proprietary AV-over-IP platform that promises 4K60 4:4:4 video, audio, USB and control over a single 1 GbE cable.
NVX is built for enterprise and campus distribution: a transmitter/decoder pair that turns any HDMI source into a routable network stream. Its codec is Crestron-proprietary but behaves like a visually-lossless 1 GbE codec, keeping 4:4:4 colour.
The bitrate model treats NVX like its 1 GbE peers (≈10:1). A 1080p30 4:4:4 source is about 1.49 Gbps raw and roughly 149 Mbps on the wire, so a 1 GbE uplink carries several encoders — and a single stream never exceeds the link.
Worked example
A 1080p30 4:2:0 signal is 746.5 Mbps raw; the NVX codec compresses it about 10:1, so the stream is about 74.6 Mbps. 4K60 still fits 1 GbE thanks to the compression.

Is NVX proprietary?
Yes — the codec is Crestron’s own, so NVX endpoints interoperate within the Crestron ecosystem, not with other AVoIP vendors.
Does NVX need a special switch?
No, it runs on standard managed 1 GbE switches, though multicast IGMP configuration is required for matrix use.
What bitrate does NVX use?
Around 300–500 Mbps for 4K60 depending on content, with 1080p much lower — always under 1 GbE per stream.
What is the difference between raw and stream bitrate?
Raw is the uncompressed signal (width × height × frame rate × bits per pixel); stream is what the codec actually puts on the wire after compression. The compression ratio is raw ÷ stream.
What do 4:4:4, 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 mean?
They describe chroma subsampling — how much colour detail is kept relative to brightness. 4:4:4 keeps full colour (3× bit depth per pixel), 4:2:2 keeps two-thirds, and 4:2:0 keeps half (1.5×).
