About JPEG 2000

JPEG 2000 (ISO/IEC 15444) is a wavelet-based codec that compresses each frame independently, which is why so many 1 GbE AVoIP vendors built their systems on it.

Unlike MPEG, JPEG 2000 uses a wavelet transform with no inter-frame prediction, so latency stays low and a single corrupted packet does not smear across frames. That made it the de-facto engine for early 1 GbE matrix switches from Visionary, AMX SVSI, WyreStorm and Dante AV.

The stream bitrate is the raw signal divided by the compression ratio (this tool models ≈8:1). It keeps 4:4:4 and 12-bit, so a 1080p30 4:4:4 signal compresses from about 1.49 Gbps raw to roughly 187 Mbps — several streams on a single 1 GbE link.

Worked example

A 1080p30 4:2:0 signal is 746.5 Mbps raw; JPEG 2000 compresses it about 8:1, so the stream is about 93.3 Mbps. Its 4:4:4 support is what makes 1 GbE matrices possible.

Why do AVoIP vendors use JPEG 2000?

JPEG 2000 vs H.264?

JPEG 2000 is higher quality and lower latency but much higher bitrate; H.264 compresses far more at the cost of latency and 4:2:0 colour.

What bitrate is typical?

1080p is usually 100–200 Mbps and 4K a few hundred Mbps depending on content, so a 1 GbE link carries a handful of streams.

What is the difference between raw and stream bitrate?

Raw is the uncompressed signal (width × height × frame rate × bits per pixel); stream is what the codec actually puts on the wire after compression. The compression ratio is raw ÷ stream.

What do 4:4:4, 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 mean?

They describe chroma subsampling — how much colour detail is kept relative to brightness. 4:4:4 keeps full colour (3× bit depth per pixel), 4:2:2 keeps two-thirds, and 4:2:0 keeps half (1.5×).
