About Just Add Power

Just Add Power (J+P) is a proprietary AV-over-IP matrix that routes HDMI video over standard 1 GbE switches — long the go-to for residential and retrofit installs.

J+P transmitters and receivers turn an ordinary managed network into an HDMI matrix, with image pull per display and no per-port distance limits. Its codec is proprietary but behaves like a visually-lossless 1 GbE codec, scaling up to 4K60.

The bitrate is the raw signal divided by the codec ratio (≈10:1 here). A 1080p30 4:2:0 source is about 746 Mbps raw and roughly 75 Mbps on the wire, so a single 1 GbE link carries several streams.

Worked example

A 1080p30 4:2:0 signal is 746.5 Mbps raw; J+P compresses it about 10:1, so the stream is about 74.6 Mbps — well within a 1 GbE uplink.

Frequently asked questions

Is Just Add Power proprietary?

Yes, its codec is proprietary, so J+P devices interoperate within the J+P ecosystem.

What switch does J+P need?

A managed 1 GbE switch with IGMP/multicast support — no special AV switch required.

Does J+P support 4K?

Yes, the current 3G line supports 4K60, with the stream compressed to fit 1 GbE.

What is the difference between raw and stream bitrate?

Raw is the uncompressed signal (width × height × frame rate × bits per pixel); stream is what the codec actually puts on the wire after compression. The compression ratio is raw ÷ stream.

What do 4:4:4, 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 mean?

They describe chroma subsampling — how much colour detail is kept relative to brightness. 4:4:4 keeps full colour (3× bit depth per pixel), 4:2:2 keeps two-thirds, and 4:2:0 keeps half (1.5×).
