About SDVoE

SDVoE (Software Defined Video over Ethernet) is an alliance standard for near-lossless 4K60 4:4:4 video over 10 GbE, built on dedicated ASIC endpoints.

SDVoE is the flagship "no compromise" AV-over-IP approach: visually lossless 4K60 4:4:4 with zero-frame latency, using a fixed ≈12:1 compression so a stream fits in a 10 GbE link at about 940 Mbps. It is backed by an ecosystem of vendors (Kramer, ZeeVee, Aurora, Christie, AVPro and more).

The bitrate is the raw signal divided by the SDVoE ratio (12:1). A 4K60 4:4:4 source is about 11.94 Gbps raw and roughly 995 Mbps on the wire — one stream per 10 GbE port, which is why SDVoE matrices use 10 GbE switching.

Worked example

A 4K60 4:4:4 signal is 11.9 Gbps raw; SDVoE compresses it about 12:1, so the stream is about 995.3 Mbps — one stream on a 10 GbE link.

Frequently asked questions

Is SDVoE lossless?

It is visually lossless (≈12:1), not mathematically lossless — indistinguishable in practice but still compressed.

Why 10 GbE?

The low compression ratio means a 4K60 stream needs ~1 Gbps, so it cannot fit 1 GbE; 10 GbE gives one stream per port with headroom.

SDVoE vs JPEG 2000?

SDVoE is a 10 GbE near-lossless codec; JPEG 2000 compresses more to fit 1 GbE, trading some quality for cheaper switching.

What is the difference between raw and stream bitrate?

Raw is the uncompressed signal (width × height × frame rate × bits per pixel); stream is what the codec actually puts on the wire after compression. The compression ratio is raw ÷ stream.

What do 4:4:4, 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 mean?

They describe chroma subsampling — how much colour detail is kept relative to brightness. 4:4:4 keeps full colour (3× bit depth per pixel), 4:2:2 keeps two-thirds, and 4:2:0 keeps half (1.5×).
